Kindness… another Fruit of the Spirit that’s difficult to define, and that the world could use more of. We recognize it when we see it. And we appreciate when we receive it… unless we’re hobbled by pride.
Google says kindness is the quality of being friendly, generous, and considerate.
Some people are more naturally attuned to the needs of others. They see others more clearly and notice when they could use a smile, encouraging word, or help with a task – all those little things that can make a big difference. Even if the difference seems small in the moment, or unappreciated, the world is a better place for it.
Too often we’re so busy with our tight schedules, or distracted by our own thoughts and disappointments, that we inadvertently or purposely put on blinders, or even blindfolds. Others’ needs feel like more than we can handle when we’re going through our own stuff. And life is full of stuff. We’re not actively UN-kind, but…
As we abide and grow in Christ, as we cooperate with the work of the Holy Spirit in us, our perspective changes. The more we appreciate the grace extended to us, the more we want to extend it to others. The closer we listen to the Holy Spirit’s nudgings, the more God can use us to meet the needs of other. When we give in obedience from the abundance God provides, we’ll not be depleted, but fulfilled.
Serving others in kindness isn’t about being a doormat, but a conduit of grace.
